A Note on the Stone: Ethiopian opal reveals its fire most brightly in natural daylight or under strong light — in dim rooms it grows quiet, keeping its colours to itself until the light returns. Please keep the stone away from water, oils, and lotions to preserve its brilliance.

A silver hand holds something that looks like it was broken off a reef somewhere warm. The opal is elongated and irregular — one edge tapering the way a piece of coral tapers where it snapped free from a larger colony, the other end fuller, more rounded, softened by whatever tide carried it here. But this coral is made of light: a warm honey-orange base that glows from within, laced with vivid green-gold fire that runs the length of the stone and flashes pink at the edges when the light catches it just right. Against the cool silver of the hand, the warmth becomes almost tropical — as though a single ember from a fire on a distant beach ended up here, still burning, still refusing to cool. At 4.1 grams the piece is barely there. But you'll feel the warmth.

Coral is one of the strangest things the ocean makes. It looks like stone but it grew like a plant, and it lived once, and it broke off some larger body sometime long ago and became something a person could pick up. Every piece of coral on a beach is a small ruin — the fragment of a city built by animals no one saw, in water no one visited, over years no one counted.

This opal has that shape. Not because it is coral — it isn't — but because nature makes similar forms when it is being generous. The branch, the shard, the piece that broke off and drifted and eventually washed into someone's hand. The Ethiopian highlands and the coral reef could not be further apart, and yet the shape is the same. This is what happens when the earth is left alone long enough: it produces forms that echo each other across continents, across elements, across everything that seems to separate one place from another.
