A golden hand holds a long, narrow sliver of light. This opal is the most elongated in the collection — 12mm from tip to base, only 4mm across — a slim, streamlined form that lies across the palm like a shard broken off from a larger, more radiant thing and left glowing on its own. The stone is highly translucent, letting sunlight pass straight through the body of it, turning the warm gold-orange core almost liquid, as though something molten had been captured mid-pour and cooled that way. Along the edges, quick flashes of green and blue appear when the light catches it — the cooler colours the fire uses when the warmer ones are already occupying the center. Every angle changes the temperature. In one turn it is amber. In another, it is aurora. The hand holds it lightly, letting the length of it rest across the fingers like something you would pick up carefully — not because it might hurt, but because you would not want to lose it in the grass.
