An oval brass locket with a scalloped outer border and fine crosshatched engraving framing a single large cabochon at its center. The vintage glass stone is dominated by deep crimson, with darker plum-wine pooling in the upper third and bright scarlet-orange flecks scattered across the lower half like embers caught mid-fall. The brass has the warm tone of aged gold, and the engraved texture around the stone catches light in parallel ridges. The cabochon’s surface is smooth and domed, and the colour inside shifts between translucent and opaque depending on the angle — in some light it reads solid red, in others the embers surface and float, as though the whole stone were lit from behind.

The Night the Moon Turns Red

A few times a year, during a total lunar eclipse, the moon doesn’t go dark — it goes red. The Earth’s shadow falls across it, filtering out all the blue light and leaving only the long red wavelengths that bend around the atmosphere. For an hour or two the whole sky holds its breath while the moon hangs there in a colour it shouldn’t be, somewhere between rust and ember, with a darker edge where the shadow is deepest and brighter patches where the atmospheric light leaks through. This stone is that moon, caught and kept. The deep plum-wine in the upper third is the shadowed curve; the scarlet across the middle is the moon’s own red fire; the orange-gold flecks are the atmospheric glow that always flickers at the eclipse edges. The engraved brass border holds it like the dark field of sky around a moon too strange to look away from. Wear it when the ordinary nights feel too quiet. Open it and place inside whatever you only name once a year — the thing you keep for the rare hour, the question you only ask yourself when the sky does something unusual. Close the clasp, and the red moon stays with you, worn against your pulse, held through all the regular nights.
