Look once and it's glass. Look again and it's water. The West German cabochon at the heart of this locket holds a carved rose beneath a clear aurora coating that shifts between ice-white, pale blue, and a faint prismatic pink depending on where the light falls. It has the quality of something found at the bottom of a very clean stream — you can almost see through it, but not quite, and that almost-transparency is what makes you keep looking. The rose motif spirals inward like a thumbprint pressed into frost.
