The stone is the color of the sky at the exact moment dusk becomes something else — that particular lavender-grey that has no clean name because it only exists for a few minutes and then is gone. Natural purple agate, polished to a smooth dome, its surface carrying the faint ghost of banding that only reveals itself when the light moves across it at the right angle. The brass frame that holds it is intricate without being heavy: a rope-twist inner border, then a layer of fine dotwork, then an outer ring of open scrollwork that catches its own small shadows.
