A small brass cherub rests against a disc of white mother of pearl the way a face rests against a pillow — settled, calm, not going anywhere. The cherub is sculpted in the Renaissance putti tradition: round cheeks, curled hair, a pair of wings framing the face like a collar, eyes half-open with the unbothered expression of something that has never once been afraid. The mother of pearl beneath carries a glow rather than a color — cream at the center warming to pale gold at the edges, with that faint iridescent shimmer that only shell produces, a whisper of rose and silver that appears and vanishes depending on which way the light falls. The milgrain bezel — a fine ring of tiny golden dots — gives the piece the proportions of a small religious medallion, the kind that European grandmothers pinned inside a baby's blanket or tucked into a confirmation dress and never mentioned again.
