A brass crown — three arches rising to a central point, each rimmed with a row of tiny beaded dots, the band broad and ornamented — sits squarely on a puffed heart of opalite. The stone does what opalite always does: it cannot decide what color it is. Held against daylight it turns a cool, milky blue, the blue of morning fog over water; angled under a lamp it warms into gold and apricot, as though someone has lit a candle inside it. The crown is positioned not at the top of the heart but at its center, slightly low — it is not a crown being offered. It is a crown already worn. At 10.1g the pendant has a weight that registers immediately when you put it on: this is not a piece that disappears against a chain. It announces itself — gently, but without apology.

There is a version of the crown story that everybody knows. A woman waits. A woman is chosen. A woman kneels, and someone else places the crown on her head — a father, a priest, a prince, a committee. The crown is a gift. The woman is grateful. The story ends.

And then there is the other version — the one Napoleon told when he took the crown from the Pope's hands at his own coronation and placed it on his own head. The version that says: I am not waiting for permission. I am not kneeling. The authority is mine because I claimed it, not because it was given.
