Unlike the smooth cabochons in the rest of the collection, this amethyst is faceted — cut into a checkerboard grid of tiny flat planes that fracture the light into dozens of small purple sparks. The effect is less "polished stone" and more "stained glass seen from inside a cathedral." A small brass butterfly rests at the center of this fractured violet field, wings open and symmetrical, body positioned as though it has just landed on the surface of the stone and is deciding whether this is where it will stay. The butterfly is compact and finely detailed — antennae curling forward, wing segments individually defined — but it does not dominate the stone.
